Standardizing <select>: The Journey So Far

3 years ago the Microsoft Edge team started to explore how to fix HTML Form Controls and their pain points when it came to styling and customizing them. As CSS and HTML has grown and evolved over the last 25+ years, working with these elements to customize them to our needs has grown increasingly difficult with developers resorting to building controls from scratch. Through the Open UI group and work from both Microsoft Edge and the Google Chrome teams, a new prototype for a new element '<selectmenu>' is available behind experimental flags. We’ll take a look at the new '<selectmenu>' and it’s capabilities so far and look at the other proposals in the works to make HTML Controls more easily stylable and customizable.
