The Real Promise of AI in Design: Beyond Productivity and Towards Intersubjectivity

Generative AI has quickly captured the public imagination. It has the potential to revolutionize the way we work, but only once we understand where its true potential lies. When we use generative AI as a starting point for design, we risk creating designs that are both unclear in intent and likely to be a poor match for user needs. Rather than seeing generative AI as a tool for increased productivity in design, we should instead explore how it can be integrated into the interface at the time of use, responding to user conditions, inputs, and individual intents. This will allow us to create designs that are more accessible, helpful, and meaningful.

In this session, we’ll interrogate the concept of intersubjectivity as it relates to the philosophy of technology and how it can be applied to the design of user interfaces. We’ll discuss how generative AI can be used to create interfaces that facilitate a more meaningful dialogue between designers, devices, and users.

About

I’ve contributed to Material Design’s adaptive capabilities through new components and layout systems and helped independent developers, startups, and civic organizations invent or improve great human-centered experiences. Previously, I was design lead at touchlab, where I helped partners build & launch projects like Quartz, Classpass, and LinkNYC.

I also host a podcast called Design Notes, exploring how creative work helps us relate to the world and each other.
