Beyond the Edge: from Serverless to Regionless

The promise of Serverless computing was always making it easier & cheaper to build applications—what could be simpler than just ""running functions in the cloud""? The reality, especially on the traditional cloud providers, turned out quite different. Sure your functions were abstracted, but you're still piecing together single-purpose appliances in designated geographical regions to make the whole system work.

With Edge computing, the number of regions exploded (at Cloudflare, where I work, it's over 250 and growing all the time), and things had to get simpler as a result—you deploy to one region: Earth. But what use is computation running worldwide if your data is still centralised? Now you have to understand a globe's worth of services, the latency between them and the caching strategies to mitigate it. Is this really better?

In this talk I'll talk about where this is all headed—computation and storage that's truly global, that truly reduces the burden on the developer & optimises for your actual traffic, not your imagined load. Some parts are available right now, others are a bit further away, but it all trends in one direction—making ""Serverless"" true to its name.
