During scanning, the camera provides the connection between the device and a physical object - a package, a passport, a shelf full of objects. Feedback appears as an AR layer on the interface, providing information in the form of location-tracked overlays.

Developers and designers who underestimate the usability challenges of scanning barcodes and IDs in mobile applications do so at their peril. Designing for the camera interface comes with a set of interaction challenges that are unlike anything encountered when designing form fills, social apps, or dashboards.

Also, not all cameras are created equal and not all physical setups are the same. The scan performance is highly dependent on the physical conditions, the arrangement of objects being scanned, the quality of the barcode that’s printed on the object, and the camera resolution of the device your end user is going to use.

During this talk, I will cram 10 years worth of best practice development for scanning design.
